BIGGEST WEEK 2024Whew! It's taken us longer than usual to sort through all of the aMAYzing 2024 Biggest Week stats, but by all accounts, this was one of the greatest festivals in Biggest Week history!
Visit our 2024 Biggest Week SUMMARY PAGE for a total 2024 Biggest Week recap including photo galleries, the entire list of birds, sponsors, eBird checklists, and more! It was an absolutely EPIC spring migration in NW Ohio, and we can't wait to do it again next year! Mark your calendars NOW for the 2025 Biggest Week In American Birding May 9-18! |
With spring migration banding now behind us, we wanted to share some of the end-of-season preliminary numbers with you. Stay tuned for a special post regarding this spring's bird numbers and how things compare throughout the years.
Every banding season is a monumental task, and we would not be able to conduct this important research without the support of numerous individuals and organizations. We would like to thank our passionate group of volunteers and seasonal technicians that put all their effort into ensuring a successful banding operation for both data quality and bird safety. We couldn't do it without all your help!!! Many thanks Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge for their continued support of this project (both in research and management of this precious habitat); Vistra's Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station for preserving and allowing access to this incredible area; and Winous Point Marsh for their commitment to research and conservation and for providing housing for BSBO's spring passerine tech. |

FROM THE FIELD: BABY PIED-BILLED GREBES by Tracy MarrThe pied-billed grebe. A small diver with big feet. Cute, not beautiful. Subtle coloration, not gaudy. The ability to do a submarine sink beneath the water and a distinctive call you can hear across the marsh. For some reason, I love them. Several years ago, I realized it’s very peaceful to watch them float on the water, dive and re-appear, dive and re-appear.

Conservation is at the heart of BSBO's mission. All of our projects and programs are designed to raise awareness and appreciation for birds and the importance of habitat conservation. We believe that connecting people to the joys of birding is the first step in building support for conservation; people care more about the things they love.
